Crossing Cultures

JAPAN

Japan is an island country, smaller than California, and like California is subject to earthquakes, tsunamis and typhoons. Due to traditional Asian religion (Shintoism & Buddhism) and materialism, Japan has been a difficult area to reach for Christ.

Population: 127.5 million people

Language: Japanese

Ethnic Groups: Japanese (99%)

Per Capita Income: $33,100

Capital: Tokyo (33,200,000 million people, most populous in the world)

Religions: Shintoism & Buddhism (86%), Christians (0.7%)

Government: Constitutional Monarchy with a parliamentary government since 660 BC

History: In the early 1900s, Japan began to open ports to the rest of the world after a long military dictatorship. Later, Japan invaded China and other Asian countries and eventually attacked the USA. After Japan was defeated in World War II, development and modernization began. Japan is now a major economic power in the world.

CCI’s ministry here: CCI began ministry here in 2006, when Pioneers missionary Tony Haug and his team of translators began translating the BTCP training materials. Translation is ongoing and God has provided for the translation. Presently, there are two classes. Filipino churches are also interested in the training.
