INDONESIAIndonesia, an island country of 17,508 islands, is the largest Islamic country in the world and the fourth largest populated country in the world. Population: 235 Million Language: Bahasa Indonesian Ethnic Groups: Javanese (41%), Sundanese (15%), Madurese (3.3%) Per Capita Income: $3,900.00 Capital: Jakarta Religions: Muslim (86%), Protestant (6%), Roman Catholic (3%), Hindu (1%) Government: Indonesia is a Republic. History: After colonization under the Dutch from the early 17th century until the early 1900s, the Japanese invaded and occupied Indonesia from 1942 to 1945. After several years of recovery and talks with the Dutch, Indonesia became a republic in the late 1940s. In 1955, a Communist Coup took place that resulted in a blood bath. Extremist Islam is a recurring problem throughout the country. However, over the last forty years, the Church has grown to 10 million believers. Much of the growth has taken place in Papua (formerly known as Irian Jaya) where great people movements came to Christ (e.g. the Dani tribe). CCI’s ministry here: This year we plan to begin training among national churches. Pray for the completion of the translation of the BTCP training materials.
