Crossing Cultures

FIJI

Fiji is located in the South Pacific Ocean, just NE of New Zealand and Australia. Fiji is a beautiful island country, evident when you land in the airport, greeted by Fijian singers. Fiji is slightly smaller than the state of New Jersey.

Population: about 1 million

Language: English, Fijian, Hindustani

Ethnic Groups: Fijian (55%), Indian (37%)

Per Capita Income: $6,200

Capital: Suva

Religions: Christian (58%), Hindu (33%), Muslim (7%)

Government: Fiji is a republic but is currently led by a military coup.

History: After almost 100 years of being a British Colony, Fiji became an independent nation in 1970, but military coups have occurred intermittently since then. Tensions continue between native Melanesians and Indians (descendents of contract workers from India in the late 1800s). In the mid 1800s, missionaries from the London Missionary Society endeavored to evangelize the savage cannibals of the Fiji islands. Many conversions took place and the majority of the inhabitants are Christians today. However, the church lacks stable leadership and many Christians are nominal.

CCI’s ministry here: CCI has been working here since 2005. Brethren Churches have embraced this pastor training equipping tool as well as other local churches. As a result of the training, churches are growing and reaching their communities for Christ.
